Dog Grooming Technician Program

Overview

Dog Grooming Technician will learn advanced dog handling, bathing and preparation techniques outlined below. This certificate program takes 4-6 weeks to complete and consists of a total of 150 hours of instruction and hands on lab work. The Dog Grooming Technician will have hands on experience in a real dog grooming salon and will need to demonstrate all required skills in a final written and practical exam prior to being awarded a certificate. (150-hour program)

HAN 101: Canine Anatomy and Handling

In HAN 101 students will learn canine anatomy, proper dog handling, difficult and aggressive dog handling techniques and handling sick, disabled and geriatric dogs. In order to successfully complete this course, student will need to pass a written exam with a minimum of 75% grade and demonstrate in a practical exam dog handling proficiency on at least 3 dogs in an actual salon environment. (15 hours Assignment and Classroom; 15 hours lab)

BAT 102: Bathing and Drying

In BAT 102 students will learn proper bathing and drying techniques per coat type. Students will learn safe bath entry and exit procedures, breed specific bathing requirements, proper water management and safe dog restraint procedures. In order to successfully complete this course students will need to pass a written exam with a minimum of 75% grade and demonstrate proper bathing and drying techniques on at least 5 dogs with different coats and behaviors in a salon environment. (15 hours Assignment and Classroom; 25 hours lab)

PES 103: Paws, Ears & Sanitary

In PSE 103 students move to the grooming floor and learn advanced nail trimming and buffing, ear cleaning and plucking and pad shaving techniques. Students will learn how to trim sanitary areas and avoid the “danger zones.” Students are introduced to nail clippers, nail files, electric clippers and other equipment. In order to successfully complete this course, student will need to pass a written exam with a minimum of 75% grade and demonstrate in a practical exam ability to perform full PE&S procedures on at least 5 dogs in an actual salon environment. (15 hours Assignment and Classroom; 20 hours lab)

BDE 104: Brushing, De-mating & De-shedding

In BDE 104 students spend their time on the grooming floor learning proper brushing and de-matting techniques. Student will learn how to brush, de-matt and de-shed a variety of coat types and lengths. Emphasizing dog safety and comfort, student will learn proper coat appropriate brushing techniques, tools and products. In order to successfully complete this course, students will need to pass a written exam with a minimum of 75% grade and demonstrate in a practical exam Brushing, de-matting and de-shedding skills on at least 5 dogs in an actual salon environment. (15 hours Assignment and Classroom; 20 hours lab)

EAQ 1002: Product and Equipment Seminar

In EAQ1002 students will be introduced to a variety of tools, shampoos, conditioners and other grooming products. Students will have an opportunity to test the different products and learn proper use and application. (10 hour seminar)
